A South Korean presidential adviser says a possible North Korean rocket launch would be "catastrophic" for diplomacy on the North's nuclear program.
USA -based websites recently released satellite photographs indicating North Korea has restored structures at a long-range rocket launch facility that it dismantled past year at the start of diplomacy with the United States.
This image, captured on March 6, 2019, shows the Sohae Satellite Launch Facility in Tongchang-ri, North Korea.
A realistic option for the South Korean president is to meet Kim again at the truce village of Panmunjom and play a "facilitator" role in Washington-Pyongyang dialogue, with a view to have a trilateral summit on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly session in NY in September, he added.
With the unsuccessful talks, South China Morning Post quoted senior researcher at Sejong Institute, Cheong Seong Chang, as saying: "The North could be trying to show the USA it can always turn back to aggressive posture by rebuilding missile sites in order to gain leverage in future talks, but without actually firing a missile or rocket".
The news follows on the heels of bombshell reports, which said North Korea is rebuilding its main rocket launch site. I'll just put it this way - expands a lot of resources and efforts so we don't have to rely on commercial satellite imagery. "And one mistake that prior administrations made repeatedly was assuming that the North Koreans would automatically comply when they undertake obligations", Bolton said.
Thompson said it was "incredibly important" that all countries continued to maintain United Nations sanctions on North Korea until it gave up its nuclear weapons. A satellite launch in April 2012 killed off an Obama administration deal for a freeze in North Korean nuclear and missile testing reached weeks earlier.

Through its reported ongoing nuclear and missile activities, North Korea may be seeking to "hedge" against the breakdown of talks with the United States, rather than cheating, a security policy adviser to South Korea's President Moon Jae-in said Tuesday.
Since the U.S. -North Korean summit process started in June, Snyder said China has eased off enforcing sanctions in the past two months.
In the interview, Bolton had also said that Washington is watching North Korean activities "unblinkingly".
Mr Biegun replied that the U.S. needed a "total solution", the philosophy that lay behind Mr Trump's rejection of Mr Kim's at the Hanoi summit to shut down North Korea's Yongbyon nuclear facility for the lifting of United Nations sanctions imposed since 2016.
"We acknowledge no one but the Supreme Leader", she added, referring to Kim Jong Un.
The military here is chiefly dependent on the U.S. Forces Korea's spy planes and satellite images because the targets are located north of Pyongyang a long way from the demilitarized zone. They - they never seem to get around to it though.
Soviet-style Communist states had a long tradition of holding general elections, he said, even if the ruling party ignored its own rules about holding regular congresses - something the North skipped for more than 30 years.
