The LG V50 ThinQ is a 6.4-inch phone with Qualcomm's latest and greatest chip, the Snapdragon 855. Internally, the V50 is very similar to the G8. Without ever touching the phone - useful in scenarios like cooking or cleaning - users can answer or end calls, take screenshots, switch between applications or adjust the volume. The controls are limited to specific apps and features - phone calls, alarms, and media playback for now - but LG says it's working to develop more uses.
It works nearly instantly - and registering a handprint only took a minute or so too - and because it uses infrared it should work great (and perhaps even better) in low light too, unlike face unlock.
What about audio? LG has always pushed sound quality in its flagships, and it's taken that to the next level by taking the speakers out of the G8 entirely. Together with the Fingerprint Scanner and Face unlock (ToF), the Hand ID makes the LG G8 ThinQ the phone with the most security options at the moment.
Quoting a marketing director at LG Electronics France, some French media outlets reported that LG was withdrawing from the European smartphone market.
In the camera department, the LG G8 ThinQ comes with a triple rear-camera array.
LG hasn't provided pricing or exact availability for either device and will instead leave that up to its carrier partners.
"From premium products to practical ones, we will continue to cater to our customers' needs by releasing phones that go beyond expectations", said Kwon Bong-seok, president of LG's home entertainment and mobile communications businesses. The display is protected with a coating of Corning Gorilla Glass on top.
Connecting to the phone via a pogo pin, it is created to resemble a cover case, giving the V50 ThinQ 5G a second 6.2in OLED display that runs off the phone's battery and can be positioned in either 104- or 180-degree angles. That's boosted by LG's stereo Boombox speaker, while its "tuned in collaboration with Meridian Audio" sound is augmented by DTS:X and MQA support and a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC.
It's all powered by the Snapdragon 855, backed up by 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, so it should be a nippy little thing. There's a 6.1-inch 3120×1440 OLED screen with a notch (making this the first LG G phone to have an OLED screen) and an 8MP camera, and around back is a dual camera setup with a 16MP super wide angle sensor and a 12MP standard snapper.
