Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, still facing calls to resign as governor a week after the revelation that his page in a medical school yearbook features a racist photograph, is now tightly focused on coming up with plans to survive.
Northam said that while the state has made progress since the first slaves arrived at what is now Fort Monroe in 1619, work remains to address the racial inequities.
President Donald Trump has weighed in on the controversy with several tweets.
Calls for Fairfax to step aside have come from state House and Senate Democrats, the Legislative Black Caucus, former Democratic governor Terry McAuliffe, Virginia's two USA senators - Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, also both Democrats - and several potential Democratic presidential hopefuls. The state's attorney general, Mark Herring, also has admitted to donning blackface in the past.
Two women have accused Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax of sexual assault, and he has emphatically denied both allegations. Northam said in a press conference a week ago, though, that he'd once darkened his skin to take part in a Michael Jackson dance competition. But he said he's in a position to lead and that "Virginia needs someone that can heal". Krzyzewski said after Saturday night's victory at Virginia.

Almost 60 percent of African-Americans in Virginia want Gov. Ralph Northam to remain in office despite the recent scandal surrounding a racist photo on the Democrat's 1984 medical school yearbook page, according to a poll released Saturday.
Party elders Sen. Mark Warner and Rep. Bobby Scott said Fairfax should resign if the allegations against him were true.
Watson also confided in a friend after seeing that Fairfax was running for office. "I have learned from this, I have a lot more to learn, but we're in a unique opportunity now".
Northam told the Washington Post he's asked his cabinet secretaries to come up with specific proposals to begin addressing issues of inequality, such as expanding access to health care, housing and transportation, and to begin reporting those suggestions on Monday.
Watson says she doesn't want any money from Fairfax - she just wants him to resign. It will be very positive and you know we have a number of inequities in this country right now and in Virginia.
The twin developments came at the end of an astonishing week that saw all three of Virginia's top elected officials - all Democrats - embroiled in potentially career-ending scandals fraught with questions of race, sex and power. More than 60% of the state's African American voters believe Northam should step down immediately. The man who wore blackface is leading the charge for this...you just can not make this stuff up.
As the crisis widened in the middle of the week, Democratic leaders and black members of the Virginia legislature appeared willing to give both Fairfax and Herring the benefit of the doubt for the time being - in Herring's case, because he apologized personally for wearing blackface.
