Millions of people fly through it every year, but it is not considered one of Germany's major hubs.
Germany's Hanover airport temporarily suspended flights after a man drove on to the apron area before police stopped his auto and overpowered and detained him, they said. Photographs from travellers at the airport appear to show an Aegean Airlines A320, whose taxi seems to have been impeded by the vehicle. Other tips involved possible extremists surveilling German airports. The vehicle was stopped by police, and the man driving the auto was detained after being "overwhelmed" by the police.
It was unclear how long flights at the airport would remain suspended.
Federal police said the driver, who is in his mid-20s, tested positive for amphetamines and cocaine.
Emergency services assess the incident
Air traffic at the airport was paralyzed for more than four hours.
Flights in and out were suspended during their investigation, but resumed on Saturday evening after the man's vehicle was declared safe. During the incident, Eurocontrol said that the airport would be closed to takeoffs and landings until 8 pm.
Bomb disposal experts were examining the auto, which police described as a routine measure.
