An electrical explosion Thursday night at a power plant in the densely populated Queens neighborhood turned the sky bright blue for a few minutes as residents watched in terror.
People took to social media to post pictures of the eerily coloured sky.
The transformer explosion has caused a temporary blackout and delayed flights at Laguardia and other airports.
"My daughter saw these insane blue lights in sky over Queens from the train!" one user tweeted.
Officers from New York Police Department's 114th Precinct were on the scene investigating the cause. "Con Edison has been in contact with officials at LaGuardia Airport, which switched to backup generation at the time of the transmission disturbance".
