In fact he was pursuing a major deal that he suggested on Thursday he might have kept pursuing through the year and might have tried to conclude if he hadn't been elected.
One lied about his knowledge of Russian-hacked emails, another about a Russian real estate deal, a third about dialogue over sanctions with a Russian ambassador.
Cohen said he had submitted a false written statement about a Trump Organization plan to build a skyscraper in the Russian capital. And because Cohen has told prosecutors that he briefed Trump about the Moscow deal, it raises new questions about whether Trump might also have been briefed about the meeting Trump Jr. hosted in New York City at Trump Tower.
It sure looks like Manafort has been lying in a continued effort to show loyalty to Trump.
Cohen, a former member of Trump's inner circle who in the past called himself the president's "fixer,", admitted this week that he made false statements to two congressional panels about the Moscow project in a bid to remain consistent with Trump's messaging about Russian Federation during the 2016 campaign. On Thursday, Trump said it was "very sad" what has happened to Manafort, adding that he's "never seen anybody treated so poorly".
The one-time presidential campaign chair for Trump reached a deal in September to plead guilty to conspiracy against the United States and conspiracy to obstruct justice but on Monday lawyers for Robert Mueller's special counsel probe accused Manafort of breached the deal by lying repeatedly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Prosecutors simply said earlier this week that Manafort "breached" his agreement by lying "on a variety of subject matters".
Earlier this week ABC News reported that Manafort's legal team had been quietly briefing the president's lawyers about the special counsel inquiry.

Fed Chair’s comments on slower hikes to boost EMs
That comment had unsettled investors who feared that it meant the Fed would need a number of further hikes to get to neutral. It was a "rookie mistake, " Omair Sharif, senior USA economist at Societe Generale, said Wednesday in a note to clients.
What does that mean? .
Prosecutor Andrew Weissmann told Judge Amy Berman Jackson on Friday that Mueller is still deciding whether to bring additional charges against Manafort.
The news reignited speculation that Manafort could be angling for a pardon from the president, a possibility that the president left open in an interview with the New York Post Wednesday. They also asserted Cohen orchestrated illegal campaign contributions in the form of payments to alleged Trump mistresses in order to protect the former real estate mogul.
Alternately, some legal analysts think Mueller may find other ways to get his findings into the public record, as he has done with unusually detailed indictments of the Russian hackers and Cohen's updated plea agreement.
A false statement charge can be a powerful cudgel for prosecutors, especially in investigations like this one where witnesses are recalcitrant and openly defiant. He's clearly anticipating more action from Mueller now that the midterms are over. Corsi belongs to a subcast of characters in the Russian Federation melodrama centered on Stone, an adviser to Trump and his campaign who did not actually serve it in a formal role. Although sources could not confirm the topic of conversation between the two, the timing is of course suspicious given WikiLeaks's subsequent dump of Hillary Clinton's emails. The authorized team alerted the Justice Department nonetheless separately disliked a recommendation to Trump in the paper.
But it's also raised new questions which have yet to be answered. Prosecutors said they will decide at a later time whether they believe that sentence range should be reduced or increased. They say they did not have any inside line to what Assange had in store.
"I pray and beg, beg and pray that you won't take my oxygen away from me", the elder Cohen wrote.
The president and his allies have escalated their attacks on Mueller in recent weeks. When Manafort was convicted in Virginia in August, Trump said he was a "good man" and that he felt badly for him.
The memo noted that Mueller's office is expected to provide the judge with an assessment of Cohen's cooperation, and that the Manhattan prosecutors are to join in presenting Cohen's assistance as a factor for the judge to consider.
KELLY: One sign of what is on the president's mind is of course what he's tweeting. He has spent many, many hours with him.
