After Border Patrol agent Dennis Dickey shot a package of colored explosive at his baby's gender-reveal party, grasses and shrubs lit up and spread across a mountainside. Upon impact, the target was to burst and reveal a cloud of either pink or blue colored smoke, meant to show the gender of the agent's baby-to-be.
A figure in the video, who is blocked out, is later seen running into the field as another person off-camera yells out, "Start packing up". He also has to pay more than $8 million in restitution.
Dickey reported the fire immediately and co-operated with law enforcement, subsequently pleading guilty to a misdemeanour breach of US Forest Service regulations.
Material from the Associated Press was used in this report.
The 2017 fire near Green Valley burned 73 square miles
Dickey shot a target containing Tannerite, a legal, but very powerful explosive.
The target was part of Dickey's pre-planned celebration to announce the gender of the couple's child and the target contained blue powder for a boy.
Agent Dickey said he attempted to put out the fire but when that failed, he reported it. "It was probably one of the worst days of my life", he added.
An exploding target to reveal a baby's gender is rare. The damage to state, federal and private land, and firefighting costs topped US$8 million (NZ$11 million). He also will be on probation for the next five years and will participate in a public service announcement for the Forest Service.
