Thad Cochran, who resigned in April amid health concerns. Which makes the news that broke last night rather surprising: the MLB PAC donated the legal maximum - $5,000 - to Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith from MS ahead of her special runoff election against Democrat Mike Espy.
Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) arrives for a hearing of the Senate Appropriations Committee's Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Subcommittee with U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke in the Dirksen Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill May 10, 2018 in Washington, DC. The newspaper included photos from the school's yearbook, including a group photo of the cheerleading squad, of which Hyde-Smith was a member. "I can not stress to you how important it is to get everybody you know out to vote".
"I always say, if a senator catches a cold, we don't have a majority", he told reporters on October 24.
Espy was introduced by Ayanna Pressley, a Massachusetts Democrat who will join Congress next year after unseating an incumbent in the primary.
The news comes just one day after Johnson and his wife, Ann, also donated $2,700 each to Hyde-Smith's campaign. Doug Jones of Alabama told MS voters that Espy could help bridge partisan divides. It will be Trump's second trip to MS on the senator's behalf since October. Baseball donated the maximum to her after the controversies, with the donation being made on November 23.
Later, at a Christmas-themed rally in Biloxi, where Trump emerged on the stage from a chimney, he said that Democrats want to impose an "extreme job-killing agenda" and that a vote for Espy would be a vote for a "Democrat agenda of socialism and open borders".

In talking about the economy, Espy's campaign website says he promotes worker training and building infrastructure to support business, such as statewide broadband. Jones did what Espy is trying to do - win as a Democrat in a conservative, Republican-dominated state.
"My approach is MS first", Espy said at last week's debate.
"We think it's a good idea to protect our homeland, don't you?"
Cindy Hyde-Smith had her lead in the first round of voting slashed after she was recorded telling a supporter: "If he invited me to a public hanging, I'd be on the front row". She was also captured on video making a joke about voter suppression, and photos posted to Facebook in 2014 show her with Confederate items and a caption reading, "Mississippi history at its best!"
"When you apologize to someone, look them in the eye", Espy said.
The race is expected to drive a higher-than-usual turnout for a runoff in Mississippi.
More than 43,000 absentee ballots have been requested for the runoff, and that number could increase as circuit clerks continue compiling information, the MS secretary of state's office said Saturday.
