Jordan, a founder of the conservative Freedom Caucus, is running for House minority leader in the new Congress against California Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the current majority leader and pick of the GOP establishment.
McCarthy is generally expected to win the top leadership slot, but conservatives are making an aggressive push for greater control in the House, according to several Republican members and aides who were granted anonymity to discuss internal GOP negotiations.
The No. 2 spot of House minority whip was claimed by Representative Steve Scalise.
"You couldn't come from a better background", Collins said.
A defiant Nancy Pelosi challenged maverick Democrats Wednesday to produce a rival who could win enough votes to prevent her from becoming the House's a new speaker.
It's a tough spot: Many new incoming members are from swing or GOP-leaning districts, and if they use their first vote in the House to back Pelosi after indicating they didn't want to that puts them in a tough spot from the get-go for reelection. Republicans held a 51-49 before the election and it may grow to 53-49 if they win a runoff in MS and Gov. Rick Scott preserves his lead over Sen.
Pelosi has yet to secure enough votes among her caucus to ensure that she will be reelected as speaker when the new Congress convenes January 3. Republican Senator Mitch McConnell and Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer were re-elected to their respective top jobs in that chamber for 2019-2020, as expected. Bill Nelson, and a recount is ongoing.
Those investigations could cover everything from Trump's ousting of Attorney General Jeff Sessions last week to Trump's past tax returns as a businessman to the findings of the Robert Mueller investigation of the 2016 election to Trump's relationship with adult film star Stormy Daniels.
"President Trump and Gov. Scott have just lied", Schumer said. He says they "said there's fraud when their own Republican officials in Florida have said there's no fraud". John Cornyn of Texas, the Republican whip, is being forced out by term limits.
"Anything less is tantamount to denying the reality of climate change", Justice Democrats communications director Waleed Shahid said in statement Tuesday.
'Have sought marriage counselling with husband', says Michelle Obama
At a time where our nation is so polarized, I think Michelle Obama's memoir, and it's timing, can serve as a teachable moment. Obama has added a European leg to her tour, appearing December 3 at Royal Festival Hall in London with more stops likely.
Schumer: Dems set to push Mueller shield bill over Whitaker
The company admitted no wrongdoing and Whitaker was not personally named in the Federal Trade Commission investigation. "We've been compliant, it's going to go on, nobody's interrupting it or interfering with it", Conway said on ABC .
Schiff condemns Trump wildfire remarks as 'punitive' toward 'devastated' state
Wildfires continued to rage on both ends of the state, with gusty winds expected overnight which will challenge firefighters. The number of people killed in that fire alone, at least 23, made it the third-deadliest on record in the state.
Elections Wednesday will also determine party leadership in the Senate. "Senate Democrats are committed to fighting to make those ideas a reality in this upcoming Congress".
Democrats re-elected their party leadership by acclamation during a closed-door meeting Wednesday.
The contest between McCarthy and Jordan reflected the split between the GOP's conservative flank, whose numbers are bolstered after the election, and what remains of the centrists. The average age of the new GOP leaders is 52.
"I think we're entering a world we haven't really seen", Jordan said, rattling off the names of the Democratic chairmen who are poised to investigate Trump.
The Democrats could in theory launch investigations into the president's administration and business affairs.
Most GOP lawmakers, though, prefer McCarthy's more affable approach, and he remained favored to win Wednesday.
But Nomiki Konst, a member of the Unity Reform Commission of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and a friend of Ocasio-Cortez's, insisted that House Democrats are not "necessarily divided" after retaking the majority.
It was a victory for the Democrats as they gained more than the 23 seats needed for the first time in eight years.
"There's a little rawness still", Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., who is running unopposed for a down-ballot position as vice chair of the GOP conference, told reporters outside the meeting room. "But there's an opportunity for us to come together and get single-focused on the message".
The midterms are over, and as those elected candidates head to Washington and with no challenger willing to step forward to run against her, they'll continue to face pressure to either carry through with their campaign promise to oppose Pelosi, or unite with the rest of the caucus and support her in the end.
