A source at the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Washington, DC told DailyMail.com Rotana's sister Tala had won a full scholarship to study at Dar Al-Fikr, a top private school in Jeddah.
They have been identified as Tala Faera, 16, and Rotana Farea, 22 by police, who said they were found fully clothed without any obvious signs of trauma.
The medical examiner is trying to determine the official cause of death. The lack of obvious trauma appeared to rule out a theory they may have jumped into the river from the George Washington Bridge.
The Saudi consulate in NY has said they are following the investigation.
Chief of detectives Dermot Shea said police are interested in finding out why the girls had headed for New York City, adding that "all clues in their past life" were being looked at.
"The detectives' work has filled in numerous pieces, but there's still some gaps that we would like to fill in and get a real clear picture of what happened in the last two months".
