The crash occurred at approximately 5 p.m. local time, officials with U.S. Air Forces Europe-Africa said in a statement.
"We are aware of a Ukrainian Su-27UB fighter aircraft that crashed in the Khmelnytskyi region during Clear Sky 2018 today".
"We understand there was an American in the backseat of the aircraft", the statement said, adding that the Air Force is investigating the incident.
Later, U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE)has confirmedthat a U.S. service member was involved in the incident, but has no made an official announcement as to their status.
