We Won! The Philippine Delegation to the United Nations led by Permanent Representative Teodoro T. Locsin Jr. with Maria Fernanda Espinosa, President of the UN General Assembly, after the Philippines won its bid for a seat in the UN Human Rights Council during elections in NY on Friday.
Granting the Philippines a fresh three-year term on the U.N. Human Rights Council has vindicated President Rodrigo Duterte's crackdown on drugs and shown his detractors to be "morally corrupt", senior officials said on Saturday.
On the eve of the elections, rights group Human Rights Watch stated that UN member nations should oppose the candidacies of the Philippines and Eritrea to the Human Rights Council due to their "egregious human rights records". Apart from India, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Fiji and Philippines also claimed the seat in the Asia Pacific Category.
"We would like to assure them that India will continue its balance and moderate approach towards the promotion and protection of human rights globally", Akbaruddin added.
India's Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin told IANS after the vote, "It is a reflection of how the world community sees India and its role in the world".
"If you want to talk human rights, we're here".
Earlier in July, the United Nations Office of the High Commission for Human Rights (OHCHR) issued its first-ever report documenting human rights abuse by Indian occupation forces in Indian-occupied Kashmir (IOK).

The new members of the Indian contingent will serve a term of three years beginning January 1, 2019.
Countries can be elected to only two consecutive terms and India had taken a year's break when its term ended in 2017. A majority of 97 votes out of the 193 countries composing the united Nations was necessary in order to be elected.
India will join China, Nepal and Pakistan who have been elected a year ago in the council.
Seats in the 47-member Council are allocated based on "equitable regional distribution" leaving Asia Pacific region 13 seats. Such elections, in which countries often predetermine who will compete for seats years in advance, have become a staple of both the Human Rights Council and the more important Security Council in NY.
Bahrain and Cameroon were also elected.
Among the five contending nations from the Asia Pacific region, India emerged at the top with 188 votes.
