- "Almost 25 years ago, the original PlayStation was introduced to the world". The PlayStation proved to be a victor for Sony, which became the first console to sell 100 million units worldwide and helped Sony dethrone the once-dominant Sega brand in the 1990s.
The company has announced plans to release the PlayStation Classic, a miniaturized version of the original PlayStation preloaded with 20 games. The Classic is 45% smaller than the original PlayStation and comes with two controllers-just the ticket for those Tekken 3 beat-downs.
A console needs games to go with it and the PlayStation Classic will include 20 titles built-in to the system. Another classic console reimagined as a miniature machine pre-loaded with beloved games is on the way.
Announced earlier today (Wednesday 19 September) the PlayStation Classic is a re-imagining of the original PlayStation first released in 1994. There were a lot of great games on the original PlayStation, so narrowing the Classic to just 20 seems like a hard task.
After news broke, Twitter users exploded in excitement -- with a dose of indifference -- over the PlayStation Classic. It's slated to launch on December 3 - the same day the original first went on sale in 1994.
The move will be the company's debut product in the retro mini console market after Nintendo released its all-in-one retro console the Nintendo Entertainment System Classic Edition in 2016. R4 Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, Wild Arms, and more. It'll come packed with an HDMI cable a USB cable, and two controllers for local multiplayer within compatible titles. The console comes with a virtual memory card allowing players to save their progress without the use of the little grey memory gadgets that came with the old console. The USB cable appears to be for power to the console; an AC adapter is sold separately.
