Vice President Mike Pence announced Thursday that the Pentagon is beginning the process of creating a sixth branch of the United States military dedicated to space that will be known as the Space Force.
At that point, the subject of a service branch for space had already been the subject of hot debate within the military and Congress. Leaders of the Air Force, which now owns existing military operations regarding space, have argued that the service does not have the resources to support a separate space service. At the time, Defense Secretary James Mattis was against the idea of a sixth branch.
Last year, some members of Congress proposed creating a "Space Corps" inside the Air Force, similar to how the Marine Corps is part of the Navy Department.

"The next generation of Americans to confront the emerging threats in the boundless expanse of space will be wearing the uniform of the United States of America", he said, adding that Congress must now act to establish and fund the department.
"It is becoming a contested war-fighting domain, and we've got to adapt to that reality", U.S. Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis said in his opening remarks before Pence's speech. It will be the first new armed service since 1947 and the sixth branch of the USA military. The two examples he cited to argue for the benefits of a space force were the US Air Force's growth during World War II and the formation of the Special Operations Command in the 1980s. "Until we have those same needs in space, the Air Force and the other services are doing all the things we need to do". In 2007, China fired a missile to destroy an aged weather satellite, demonstrating in a dramatic fashion its ability to deploy anti-satellite weapons.
