U.S. Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt, who pleased President Donald Trump by rolling back environmental regulations but came under fire for travel and security expenses and a condo arrangement, has resigned, Trump said on Thursday.
Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, who chairs the Senate environment panel, said that during Pruitt's tenure, the EPA "has rolled back punishing regulations that were hurting American workers and stifling our economy". "Pruitt created a culture of corruption at EPA that has never been seen before in a federal agency, and for months President Trump idly stood by and allowed him to do further harm".

Pruitt made no mention of the various ethics complaints in his resignation letter, instead praising Trump for having "blessed me personally and enabled me to advance your agenda beyond what anyone anticipated".
"It is extremely hard for me to ease serving you in this role first because I count it as a blessing to be serving you in any capacity, but also because of the transformative work that is occurring", Pruitt wrote.
The media have hounded the White House about Pruitt for months, with every news briefing containing a question about some action of his or another.

Mr. President, it has been an honor to serve you in the Cabinet as Administrator of the EPA.
Inhofe praised Pruitt in a statement Thursday for doing "great work" leading the agency.
Pruitt previously served as Oklahoma attorney general, a role in which he repeatedly sued the EPA. Andrew Wheeler, the No. 2 official at EPA, will now take over the agency. Mr. Wheeler is a longtime Washington insider unlikely to commit ethical mistakes on Mr. Pruitt's scale. In recent weeks, top aides and EPA staffers resigned, as Congress continued to probe Pruitt's apparent misdealings.
Pruitt's EPA has also put restrictions on environmental science and is in the process of weakening federal fuel economy standards. He spent about nine years working for the company, where-according to his LinkedIn profile-he helped "lead the firm's practice by advising numerous types of clients on comprehensive legislative, regulatory and operational strategies to best prepare for a carbon-constrained future".
Trump told journalists aboard Air Force One that there was "no final straw" that led to Pruitt's departure, and that the move - which he said had been in the works for "a couple of days" - was "very much up to him".
