The European Union drew up the list in March but is only activating it on Friday after US President Donald Trump followed through on his threat to impose 25 percent tariffs on steel imports and 10 percent on aluminium. Europeans claim that is simply protectionism and breaks global trade rules. Its biggest target has been China, against which Trump this week ordered new tariffs on $200 billion worth of goods.
What it means: Trump made good on his promise to put tariffs - basically a tax on goods from other countries - on steel and aluminium coming from the European Union to the US.
Trump told carmakers at a meeting in the White House on May 11 that he was planning to impose tariffs of 20 or 25 percent on some imported vehicles and sharply criticized Germany's automotive trade surplus with the United States.
The US now imposes a 2.5 per cent tariff on imported passenger cars from the European Union and a 25 per cent tariff on imported pickup trucks.
That list includes roughly 160 products such as United States sunbeds, paper towels, corduroy trousers and porcelain tableware.
The European Union will respond to any USA move to raise tariffs on cars made in the bloc, a senior European Commission official said, the latest comments in an escalating trade row.
"If these Tariffs and Barriers are not soon broken down and removed, we will be placing a 20% Tariff on all of their cars coming into the U.S. Build them here!"
