U.S. President Donald Trump told Group of Seven leaders that the United States wanted a quick end to trade practices that he says have led to an exodus of American companies and jobs to other countries.
The two-day summit has been marred by a tit-for-tat exchanges of hostile tweets, with U.S. trading partners furious over Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, the European Union and Mexico as part of his "America First" agenda.
In the communique announced by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the group of major industrial nations - Canada, the USA, the UK, France, Italy, Japan and Germany - agreed on the need for "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade" and the importance of fighting protectionism.
During the call in May, sources told CNN that Trudeau asked Trump how he could justify national security as a reason for placing tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
But, he said, the US could no longer tolerate "brutal" deals, even threatening to tear up the North American Free Trade Agreement if he didn't get his way.
In May, Trump hit Canada, Mexico and the European Union with steel and aluminum tariffs as part of an effort to create "FAIR TRADE" agreements with America's partners.
In an "extraordinary" exchange, Trump repeated a list of grievances about USA trade, mainly with the European Union and Canada, a French presidency official told reporters.
Macron said: "We'll all be behind him to support this essential initial initiative in the fight for global denuclearization".
