The volcano now has an aviation colour code of red according to the USGS, which means that eruption is imminent/ongoing with significant ash-plumes being released into the atmosphere.
Snyder said Kapoho Bay is nearly completely filled with lava, with the flow from fissure 8 protruding 0.7 miles into the bay.
Lava from Kilauea has covered an area of almost 5,000 acres, according to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Hawaii County authorities say the lava has now destroyed at least 117 homes, having already cut a destructive path through the residential areas of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens in the Puna district.
