4th annual Memorial Day Cruise: Begins in the parking lot at Fin's Restaurant located at 25 W. Grand Avenue in Grover Beach at 11 a.m. Participants are encouraged to fly American flags as they drive along Highway 1 to Port San Luis and back to the beach in Oceano. The parade moves down Main Street to Veterans Memorial Park for a service.

In Sandwich, services begin at 11 a.m.at Veterans Park Gazebo in downtown Sandwich, 11 a.m., services will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery, St. Paul's Cemetery, Pratt Cemetery and Pine Mound Cemetery.
Beginning at 10 a.m. Friday at the cemetery, 6500 S. 129th East Ave., cadets from public school JROTC programs, family members and cemetery staff will join together to raise casket flags of veterans donated in years past.
A Memorial Day Weekend Service of Remembrance is scheduled for 1 p.m. on the steps of the Fairmount Community Mausoleum at Fairmount Cemetery. A ceremony will follow at Ridgewood Cemetery. Gen. Jimmy G. Dishner, of Orleans, as guest speaker, music, Coast Guard Honor Guard and wreath-laying. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held in the City Hall auditorium.
As we head into Memorial Day weekend, the rows of headstones that mark the final resting place of over 400,000 USA service members should stand as reminders-as should all grave markers at each of our country's 135 national cemeteries-for us to take a moment to set aside our political caterwauling and focus on the objective of the solemn holiday: to honor the men and women who died in battle while serving in the USA military.
