Mount Kilauea has continued to erupt and shows no signs of easing.
As lava continues to spew from Kilauea in Hawaii, the glow of the volcano over the course of a night was caught in a time-lapse video. The observatory said in a release that the volcano's fissures were actively expelling lava during the period in which the time-lapse footage was shot.
Officials shut down Puna Geothermal shortly after the current eruption began.
The company also says it believes the lava's movement towards the station has halted and if anything, the molten rock now seems to be going in the other direction: the probability of it approaching the plant seems low, Ormat said.
A spike in the level of gases in the air could lead to a mass evacuation as could a problem at the plant.
Gemini Observatory Hawaii volcano eruption latest Lava flows continue to run into the Pacific Ocean
On Monday, lava entered and then stalled on the property of a geothermal plant near one of Kilauea's new volcanic vents.
He said that ten wells have been cooled with cold water to counter the pressure from rising volcanic steam. The plant harnesses heat and steam from the earth's core to spin turbines to generate power.
Lava has already destroyed almost 50 buildings including dozens of homes. "This activity has destroyed the former Hawaii Geothermal Project site", it said, referring to a warehouse on the property.
A flammable gas called pentane is used as part of the process, though officials earlier this month removed 190,000 litres of the gas from the plant to reduce the chance of explosions. It can also cause explosions when it's ignited while trapped underground.
Ormat said in a May 15 statement that there was a low risk of surface lava making its way to the facility. At the summit, that rate is 3,000 to 6,000 tons a day. One man was seriously injured after being hit by a flying piece of lava.
The methane can seep through cracks several feet away from the lava. Doctors saved his leg, but he must avoid putting weight on it for six weeks. Lava flowing from the volcano recently reached the ocean, causing a unsafe lava-haze phenomena known as ' laze' that sends acid- and glass-laced steam shooting into the air, creating yet another hazard for those downwind of the lava's ocean entry point. He said the additional plugs will be installed if workers can complete the work without being interrupted by molten rock or sulfur dioxide emissions from nearby fissures.
