At Google I/O 2018 last week, Google announced a completely new app called Google News. Tapping the + icon will allow you to search for topics, locations, and sources you want to add to your list, and the more of these you add, the better Google News will be at delivering stories you know you'll like. This makes sense, especially when the source of a news story is a video, but there didn't appear to be any option to jump from the video to read written coverage of the same announcement.
When there's a particularly heated or controversial story floating around, it's important to read up on it from as many viewpoints as possible.
The dramatic redesign of the News app may lured people away from the popular Apple version, but time is needed to gauge the general reaction to the new offering. A lot of the stories on Google News feature large header photos and short video clips, but you can shrink these down to view more stories on your phone at once. For me, this ranged from some political news to technology and sports. But when an app seems to stuggle to provide you with a broad overview of events you start to wonder who exactly it's going to be relevant for. Google News also gives you the same story from multiple outlets, including some you'd never normally see, giving you a more balanced picture. We have no doubt that it will improve, but as it stands it's hard to rely on a service that thinks it's relevant to surface a story about broadband speeds in the West Midlands to a technology journalist living in London.
The Favorites tab is where you go to help teach Google News what your interests are, which areas of the world you want news about and news organizations you want the app to feature.
