Sen. Ed Markey, D-Massachusetts, is leading the way by formally forcing a vote on a resolution to try to restore the rules, which since 2015 have tried to ensure that all internet traffic is treated equally.
Net neutrality supporters say a window of opportunity still exists because the FCC has not moved to finalize its new rule that overturns the old rule. Recently, Washington became the first state in the nation to enact its own "net neutrality" law, and just last week OR joined the party.
The new FCC rules, once effective, would give internet service providers powers to change how consumers access the internet, but include new transparency requirements that require them to disclose any changes to consumers. When the FCC announced its proposal to eliminate net neutrality protections earlier this year, people pushed back and filed millions of comments supporting a free and open internet.
"Now, on June 11, these unnecessary and harmful Internet regulations will be repealed and the bipartisan, light-touch approach that served the online world well for almost 20 years will be restored", FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said in a statement Thursday.
Following the FCC's repeal of the Open Internet Order last December, Senate Democrats have been working with open internet advocates by holding meetings around the United States with the hope of rallying grass-roots support.
"This is a moment of truth: There's no more pretending to be for Net Neutrality or proposing fake compromises".
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted along party lines to get rid of the rule in December, arguing that internet service providers were not charging to prioritize content. Susan Collins, Maine Republican, prepared to vote with them.

India's team for England ODI series announced
India batsman Ambati Rayudu is back in the ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against England in July. The right-hander scored 423 runs in 10 matches at a healthy average of 42.30 and strike rate of 151.61.
With Republicans in the majority, 236-193, in the House, the resolution is unlikely to pass, and even if it does, it would still need President Donald Trump's signature.
"We're now one step away from letting the American public see where their elected officials stand on protecting their internet service", Schumer said. "Tell the Senate they must protect net neutrality to keep the web open".
Without net neutrality rules, many lawmakers predict there will be less competition than there already is, fewer choices for consumers and higher prices.
When Facebook was created, Mark Zuckerberg did not have to pay internet providers extra fees and he did not need to ask any permission to add the site to their networks. And yeah, your Internet in the U.S. might not be so free in the future.
That's why Washington state was the first in the union to pass regulations requiring that net neutrality be observed within its borders.
The new leadership of the FCC has given us an opportunity to do just that, by freeing the internet from outdated, monopoly-era regulations.
