National pharmacy retailers have increasingly been proactive in addressing the wave of opioid addiction that has decimated communities across the USA, providing services ranging from counseling to sites and methods that allow for the safe disposal of medications.
"We are taking action in the fight against the nation's opioid epidemic", Marybeth Hays, executive vice president of health and wellness and consumables at Walmart U.S., said in a statement. "While this issue requires many resources to solve, we are confident this unique, easy-to-use disposal solution, DisposeRx, will make a meaningful impact on the lives of many". The product, when mixed with warm water, can turn any opioid product into a soft gel, rendering it unusable. The chemicals in the packet are listed as safe by the FDA.
In 2017, CVS announced that it would enact a seven-day limit for opioid prescriptions for certain conditions and new patients. The policies also apply to Sam's Club, which is owned by Walmart. Too often, these risky narcotics remain unsecured where children, teens or visitors may have access. Walmart U.S. helps sponsor youth-based curriculums on the risks associated with prescription drug abuse, including Prescription for Life with EverFi. John Boozman, R-Ark.
The supply limit will begin within the next 60 days, the company said.
