Alvarez will have his hearing with NSAC on Wednesday with the hope being that he will be cleared and able to return to action this fall with the rematch against Golovkin still the fight to make at 154 pounds.
The two middleweight megastars were due to collide in Las Vegas on Cinco de Mayo, eight months on from a first meeting that ended in a controversial draw.
However, the 27-year-old tested positive for banned fat-stripper clenbuterol earlier this year and subsequently pulled out of the fight, claiming that contaminated meat in Mexico had caused the sample as opposed to deliberate attempts to dope.
The middleweight champion has found a replacement for Canelo Alvarez, who has been suspended for six months by the Nevada Athletic Commission for failing two drug tests. Golovkin and Alvarez fought to a widely disputed draw last September that had fans criticizing the integrity of the judges assigned to the fight- especially Adalaide Byrd's 118-110 score in favor of Alvarez, which pretty much defied explanation.
In a report from ESPN's Dan Rafael on Wednesday, Vanes Martirosyan will be the opponent for Golovkin on May 5th at Carson, California's StubHub Center.
The main reason is Martirosyan's credentials - he is a junior middleweight who would be moving up in weight, his last fight was a defeat and he has not fought since that defeat back in May 2016.

The manual auto hits 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds, and you can slice that 0.2 second off that figure with the M DCT box. More useful, there are now dedicated selector switches on the dashboard for various engine and steering characteristics.
The bout was confirmed by HBO Boxing, which will air the event.
"Vanes hasn't been active, but he had been looking for a fight", Loeffler said in an interview with Yahoo Sports. "That's the fight that GGG wants". I didn't ask about money at all.
But with Alvarez suspended there was too little time between the hearing and the fight do promoters chose to cancel the bout.
Any rematch between Alvarez and Golovkin will be tinged with animosity.
"Vanes dropped [Demetrius] Andrade; he lost a close decision to [Jermell] Charlo that a lot of people thought he won and he lost a competitive fight with Erislandy Lara".
