Ten hurricanes tore through the Atlantic in 2017. In total, 86 names have been retired since 1954.
NOAA's National Hurricane Center is a member of the World Meteorological Organization's Region IV Hurricane Committee, and is responsible for issuing tropical cyclone forecasts and warnings for both the Atlantic and eastern North Pacific basins. The names alternate between male and female. If more than 21 storms form in one season, such as in 2005, the Greek alphabet is used to name the additional storms.
