The 22-year-old Czech - who juggles time training and racing between the two sports on the World Cup tour - will become the first athlete to ever compete in both alpine skiing and snowboarding at an Olympic Winter Games.
While commentators and fans were surprised at what had just happened after the run, Ledecka was caught off guard herself.
"I thought they were going to put a couple more seconds on my time", Ledecka later said, well aware that the race would be decided by hundredths of a second.
Vonn will have another chance to become the oldest female medallist in Olympic alpine skiing in her favoured downhill on the same mountain next week. "I've done that for many years so I know how to do that".
"From skiing for snowboard, I take the fast speed, I'm not afraid of the speed. I was just trying to do my best run". Vonn was the first racer on the hill Saturday; she wound up finishing in a tie for sixth. All the other girls didn't risk a lot. Prior to the Olympics, she had never finished better than 29th in any event.
Shiffrin wasn't in the event, but her old skis proved magical for Ledecka on the Olympic stage.

'New Yorker' says handwritten note by former Playmate details affair with Trump
A former Playboy Playmate's account of an illicit affair with President Donald Trump reveals the president to be a man of habit. The deal, which netted Karen McDougal $82,500, has prevented her from discussing the alleged relationship with Trump .
And Ledecka started her career as a snowboarder, plain and simple. But her Olympic medal total is modest: a gold in the downhill and a bronze in the super-G in 2010.
"They're very supportive and professional and maybe that's why I'm up here right now", she said. She sped down the slope, making great time by running on an efficient line. Her best finish ever came at Lake Louise, Alberta in December 2016 when she came in 19 in the first race of her first full World Cup season.
"She did a really good run and I want to congratulate her because the Olympics is so special and anything can happen. I am overwhelmed", Hanyu said.
She won the parallel giant slalom at the world snowboard championships last March. I'm happy about my run. "But I think it was a good programme, a good fight". And then the 26th position skier, or snowboarder we should say (Ledecka), borrowed a pair of American phenom Mikaela Shiffrin's skis, and proceeded to create arguably the biggest upset of the 2018 Winter Olympics. However, she lost a chunk of time both before the midpoint and again on the last key part of the course, a jump-turn combination that she flubbed and was sure cost her a medal.
At those Vancouver Games, Vonn won gold in the downhill and bronze in the super-G. In fact, if she were to win gold in the parallel giant slalom she'd be the first woman to win gold in two different disciplines in the same Winter Olympics.
Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu, who was injured for three months, also pulled off an incredible feat by becoming the first back-to-back men's figure skating champion in more than six decades and emulate American Dick Button, Olympic victor in 1948 and 1952.
