State of Emergency (SOE) was declared in Maldives for 15 days, starting February 5 night, after President Yameen Abdul Gayoom said that the Supreme Court was in defiance of the constitution for ordering for release of political prisoners and lawmakers.
China today called for resolution of political crisis in Maldives through dialogue without external intervention as the embattled President Abdulla Yameen, who is closely allied with Beijing, declared a state of emergency to stay in power amid rising tide of opposition.
Since the surprise, unanimous ruling last week ordering the release of imprisoned opposition leaders, president Yameen Abdul Gayoom has lashed out at the court, while opposition protests have spilled into the streets of the capital, Male, and soldiers in riot gear have stopped politicians from meeting in the parliament building.
Husnu Al Suood, the president of Maldives Bar Association and a former Attorney general, said: "I just spoke to the Chief Justice and he told me that the gates of the Supreme Court (are) being stormed by the military".
The crisis, which has included repeated rounds of clashes between police and opposition protesters, began when the Supreme Court ruled last Thursday that that all politicians opposed to Yameen, including Nasheed, be released.
His estranged half-brother, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who has sided with the opposition, was also detained in the early hours of Tuesday. "We must remove him from power".
The supreme court, said on Sunday there were no obstacles. "Nobody in Maldives is required to, nor should, follow this unlawful order", he said.

"This declaration is unconstitutional and illegal", he said. "President Yameen should resign immediately".
