The Bulls have agreed to a deal with the Pelicans that will send Nikola Mirotic to New Orleans, according to a report.
While some of the details are still being worked out, it looks as though the Bulls will get Jameer Nelson, Omer Asik, Tony Allen, and a 2018 first-round draft pick.
Chicago and New Orleans had discussed a Mirotic trade earlier, but the deal stalled initially because the Bulls didn't pick up the team option on the previous year of his contract. It was clear rather quickly after the Mirotic-Portis incident that the Bulls would be ushered toward dealing one of the two, and Mirotic would have been a decent bet to move at the deadline regardless.
Such cost-controlled rookie contracts are invaluable to an organization with limited flexibility, and at some point the Pelicans are going to need to add young talent to the roster.
Mirotić is averaging 16.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists in under 25 minutes per game this season, and he's shooting 47.4 percent from the field, 42.9 percent from beyond the arc, and 82.3 percent from the free-throw line. Quickly and consistently, it became evident the Bulls would work to trade Mirotic, who sought elsewhere a starting spot he lost to rookie Lauri Markkanen after winning it in training camp.

I am overachieving with Chelsea, claims Antonio Conte
Bournemouth stunned champions Chelsea with a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to six games.
Whatever the case, the fact of the matter is that the hottest trade rumor relating to the Utah Jazz has been officially snuffed out.
"New Orleans is planning to guarantee the $12.5M salary of Mirotic in the 2018-19 season, league sources tell ESPN". "This type of deal allows us to put Paul and Cris out on the floor more than they've been all season long".
The other benefit for the Bulls is that they get worse this year, thereby improving their draft prospects.
"The draft asset we acquired in this deal was far and away the best thing we had [going in talks]", Paxson said. Tellingly, when asked about waiving players, Paxson said a week remains until the February 8 deadline.
The Bulls had been looking to trade Mirotic, who missed Chicago's first 23 games after teammate Bobby Portis punched Mirotic in the face two days before the season-opener. And finding the right pairing may very well be the issue this time around, just as it likely was in trade talks involving Nikola Mirotic.
