President Donald Trump's former chief strategist Steve Bannon has been subpoenaed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller to testify before a grand jury in a probe into alleged ties between Russian Federation and Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.
Some legal experts said the subpoena could be a sign that the investigation was intensifying, while others said it may simply have been a negotiating tactic to persuade Bannon to cooperate with the investigation.
The special counsel's office has used subpoenas before to seek information on Mr. Trump's associates and their possible ties to Russian Federation or other foreign governments. "Even if you thought that this was not treasonous, or unpatriotic, or bad s--, and I happen to think it's all of that, you should have called the Federal Bureau of Investigation immediately", he said, according to the book.
News of the subpoena comes on the same day that Bannon appeared on Capitol Hill on Tuesday to provide testimony before the House Intelligence Committee in their probe into Russian meddling.

In Michael Wolff's explosive book Fire and Fury, Inside the Trump White House Hicks is described as one of Trump's favorite aides.
Regardless, Bannon is an important figure in Trump's drive to the White House - and he may have interesting things to tell Mueller. Six days later, Bannon stepped down from his post as executive chairman at Breitbart News. Two other former Trump associates, George Papadopoulos and former National Security Adviser Gen. Michael Flynn have already been indicted on charges of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The subpoena also indicates that Bannon is not a target of the special counsel because Justice Department rules allow prosecutors to subpoena targets only in rare circumstances. Mr Flynn later pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
