Airbus has now outsold Boeing for six straight years, encouraging the company to predict that it's just a few more away from also out-delivering its Seattle-based competitor, something last achieved in 2011. Boeing released its 2017 deliveries and orders figures last week.
On Monday, Airbus' outgoing chief operating officer, Fabrice Brégier, said "there are clearly other potential customers beyond Emirates".
The A380 - the world's largest passenger airliner - drew worldwide attention when launched a decade ago but has always struggled to win enough customers. The company has delivered over 200 of the double-decker aircraft, with 95 still on its order book, far below the 1,200 it expected when the aircraft was introduced in 2005.
"If we can not work out a deal with Emirates, I think there is no choice but to shut down the program", John Leahy, the company's chief operating officer, told reporters on Monday. "If people want to fly, they need to fly in bigger aircraft", he insists.
The pan-European firm said it had booked 1,109 aircraft orders and a record 718 deliveries past year.
"It's a strong market and it's recovering".
