According to its latest trading update, third quarter like-for-like sales in the United Kingdom grew by 2.3 per cent - representing Tesco's eighth consecutive quarter of growth - and total sales grew 2.5 per cent.
United Kingdom rivals Sainsbury's, Britain's second largest supermarket group, and fourth-ranked Morrisons, both beat forecasts for Christmas trading.
M&S said like-for-like revenues fell 1.4 per cent in the 13 weeks to December 30 while Tesco's United Kingdom sales rose 2.3 per cent in the 19 weeks to January 6.
On Thursday, M&S said same store food sales fell 0.4%.

The price war that has ravaged the industry (thank Aldi and Lidl for that) doesn't just effect the likes of Tesco and Morrisons and Waitrose - often seen as a more "premium" supermarket - Waitrose also complained of margin pressures.
But Tesco missed overall group forecasts for Christmas trading as strong sales of fresh food were undermined by lower demand for general goods such as DVDs and computer games.
The wholesaler, which was the UK's largest tobacco supplier, went into administration in November, resulting in lost sales across Tesco stores.
Despite the sales disappointment M&S said it would maintain its financial guidance for the full 2017-18 year.

While inflationary pressures remained a problem for many United Kingdom food firms, Tesco said it had continued to work with its supplier partners to help mitigate the impact on its customers.
