Hamdullah Mohib, Afghanistan's ambassador in Washington, said in a tweet on Monday that Trump's tweet was a "promising message to Afghans who have suffered at the hands of terrorists based in Pakistan for far too long".
"Pakistan has made tremendous efforts and sacrifices in combating terrorism and made outstanding contributions to the global anti-terrorism cause", said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang in Beijing.
Pakistan's National Security Committee, a body that deals with defense issues, said the USA criticism stemmed from Washington's failure to win its 16-year war against the Taliban in Afghanistan and that Pakistan "cannot be held responsible for the collective failure in Afghanistan".
The official added the administration would continue to "review Pakistan's level of cooperation", Fox News reported.
Earlier Monday, President Trump, in his first tweet of 2018, said that the United States "has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools".
The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and attended by Pakistan's Foreign, Interior, and Defense ministers, as well as the chiefs of staff of the Pakistan airforce, army, and navy. Overall, the USA gave Pakistan around $67 billion in aid between 1951 and 2011, according to the Center for Global Development, a think tank based in Washington, D.C.
The summit comes as demonstrators took to the streets of Karachi to protest Trump and the U.S.

Islamabad denies allegations it is harboring Afghan insurgents and instead complains anti-state militants are using the neighboring country for terrorist attacks against Pakistan.
"[Trump's tweet] is a positive message for us, should USA pressure on Pakistan increase", Mohib added.
Asif declared that USA have suffered huge losses in Afghanistan. "If the funds that Pakistan receives from the USA are cut off, this can exert direct pressure on Pakistan and we welcome this effort".
Trump and U.S. Vice President Mike Pence have in the past accused Islamabad of supporting terrorist groups and have demanded that Pakistan act against the Taliban and Haqqani network.
