The team's 12 losses this season are their most since 2011, but the Colts haven't been a viable AFC contender in years. WISH-TV's Anthony Calhoun first reported the firing.
During the 2012-13 National Football League season, Pagano missed 12 games due to his battle with leukemia but rallied the Colts to the playoffs. Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, who assumed more play calling duties this season and is thought of as one of the stronger first-time head coach options on that side of the ball, is also someone the Colts and others will want to talk to.
But the team failed to compile a winning record the past three seasons as they were hampered by multiple injuries to quarterback Andrew Luck.
Pagano's "D" ranked 31st in yards and 30th in points allowed this season after an overhaul under Ballard.
Vikings offensive line in flux heading into final week of season
A loss that night would have left the Vikings tied for third place in the division, before a home game against the 4-1 Packers . Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs grabs a touchdown in the third quarter to put the Vikings up 23-7.
Minimum wage rises to $10.40 an hour on path toward $15
Lawmakers later changed the law to only require employers to make up the difference when tips don't exceed the minimum wage. However, the minimum wage increases only apply to restaurants that are part of a chain of 30 or more locations nationwide.
Fiesta Bowl nostalgia? Not for Penn State and Washington
The junior still had a superb season, finishing with 2,154 all-purpose yards and 22 touchdowns, including 1,134 yards rushing. As the leader of the Boise State program, Petersen guided the Broncos to wins over Oklahoma and TCU in the Fiesta Bowl .
Pagano guided the Colts to a 56-46 overall record (including the postseason) after joining the team in 2012.
Owner Jim Irsay almost made this move twice in recent years, and with the franchise struggling and the future of Andrew Luck in doubt and with rookie general manager Chris Ballard embarked on a long-term reshaping of the organization, more changes are coming in 2018, league sources indicated. His high-water mark came in 2014, when a frisky Indianapolis roster made it to the conference championship only to lose to the Patriots. But Luck's missed 26 of the past 48 games, when a pair of 8-8 campaigns preceded this year's rebuilding season. As for Pagano, he's a lock to find another gig - just not as a head coach.
The mystery surrounding Luck's surgically repaired right shoulder - which kept him out the entire season and recently led him to Europe to seek treatment - could serve as an asterisk on the attractiveness of the Colts' vacancy.
