Reports did not speak of any immediate injuries in the strikes, the first in over ten days.

Israeli tanks and aircraft hit the Gaza Strip on Friday after rocket fire from the Palestinian enclave targeted a southern community, the army and Palestinian sources said.

A spokesperson for the Sha'ar HaNegev municipality, bordering the Gaza Strip, stated that a third rocket hit one of the Gaza border communities.

Israel's Iron Dome missile defence system intercepted two rockets fired from the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army said on Twitter on Friday.

Rocket-warning sirens began shortly after midday in the Sha'ar Hanegev and Sdot Negev regions, alerting residents to take shelter, the Israeli army said on Twitter. While in Kfar Azza, residents and guests were marking the birthday of deceased IDF soldier Oron Shaul, z'l, whose remains are still being held hostage by Gaza's ruling Hamas terrorists along with those of IDF officer Hadar Goldin, z'l.

Israel's military said about 2,000 Palestinians rolled burning tires and threw rocks at soldiers stationed near the Gaza border and troops fired "selectively against four main instigators".

The incident was the latest round of escalation between Israel and the Palestinians, which was triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in a statement on December 6.

Tensions have been high in the region since the U.S. decision on Jerusalem was announced on December 6.

At least 10 Palestinians were injured in the clashes.
