The messaging portion of Instagram was once just an afterthought, but now is a core reason why many people use it.
If you're an avid Instagram user, you're probably more than a little familiar with the app's direct messaging capabilities (or DMs, as the youths say).
Similar to Facebook Messenger, Instagram is testing a standalone app for private messages called Direct. The app is reportedly quite similar yet simple and attractive, a winning formula that Snap has yet to crack.
Instagram product manager Hemal Shah told Verge that the move enables them to craft a stronger messaging experience, as opposed to Direct being a feature of Instagram. Once you download and install Direct on your smartphone, your messages inbox from the main Instagram app will be replaced, and, will be accessible from the Direct app. The Verge has reported that a standalone Direct app is being tested on iOS as well as Android. He further goes on to explain how private messaging can never be a best-in-class experience when it lives inside an app meant for broadcasting publicly. On opening this app, the camera pane will open and emphasize users to create new content such as photos and videos for sharing.
'Direct has grown within Instagram over the past four years, but we can make it even better if it stands on its own. Now Facebook owned company, Instagram is working on a standalone app that will allow its users to communicate with their Instagram friends.
The app consists of three main panes interfaces. To do this, they've made sure that the app opens straight into the camera. And you don't have to send photos; you can also just send your a message through the app. The camera is said to be identical to the one on Instagram with four new and exclusive filters too. Instagram did not originally have private messaging at all when it first launched in 2010, and the platform still lacked messaging all the way up to the end of 2013, when the feature was added as a way to keep up with Snapchat.
