27 delegates from India, Afghanistan and other Asian countries attended the inaugural ceremony of the port.
Rohani, however, downplayed the rivalry in his speech at the bridge's inauguration and said the port would bring "more engagement and unity" among regional countries.
The Chabahar port's development was accelerated after Tehran signed the nuclear pact, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, with Washington and five other major powers in 2015 to put curbs on its disputed nuclear programme in exchange for relief from punishing economic sanctions.
So why is Chabahar a key project for India? An 11-billion dollar Hajigak iron and steel mining project has been awarded to seven Indian companies in central Afghanistan.
Chabahar provides India with an easy land-sea linkup with Afghanistan. Weeks before Sunday's inauguration, a top leader of Afghanistan, Chief Executive Abdullah, said: "Afghanistan used to rely only on one transit road, which was through Karachi. Ahead of the inauguration, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met her Iranian counterpart Zarif in Tehran on Saturday, during a surprise stopover on her way back from a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting in Russian Federation, and discussed the port project among other issues.
The external affairs ministry said Swaraj and Zarif discussed various aspects of India-Iran relations and ways to strengthen these during the meeting, besides exchanging views on regional and global developments of mutual interest. The cargo was sent from Kandla port in Gujarat in October this year.
