The Onslow County Sheriff's Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation took 32-year-old Earl Kimrey into custody on Friday.
Earlier Saturday, officials said that the live-in boyfriend of Mariah Woods' mother was charged in connection with the case.
Mariah's mother told the Onslow County Sheriff's Office that she last saw her daughter at their family home, at 2404 Dawson Cabin Road in Jacksonville, on Sunday night when she put her to bed.
Records reportedly show that Kimrey broke into a home and stole two dressers around the time Woods disappeared, according to WNCN. WCTI spoke with a 23-year-old Newport, North Carolina woman Wednesday who said she was the woman pictured in the surveillance photos.
"The searches will now shift to a recovery process", deputies said of the more than 700 volunteers that poured into the county along the North Carolina coast about 120 miles (193 kilometers) southeast of Raleigh, searching woods, outbuildings and anyplace else for the girl.

Kimrey is being held on more than $1 million bond. Kimery told her the little girl woke up and he told her to go back to sleep. Officials do not know where her body may be.
"We all hope and pray to find her alive, but it is still extremely important we find her".
The FBI, which was also at the news conference, said that two areas in Pender County were now part of the focus of the search. "Just bring her home, please, safe and sound". Prosecutors are reviewing whether additional charges should be filed.
FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Stanley Meador said authorities spent days searching by foot, boat and in the water for any leads.
