This alone increased the total number of violent crimes in 2016 as compared to a year ago, by 0.8%.
Delhi registered 40 per cent (1,996) of the total number of rape cases in the 19 cities and almost 29 per cent cases each of cruelty meted out by husband and his relatives and dowry deaths across the country. Uttar Pradesh tops the chart with a whopping 9,422 cases followed by Maharashtra (second) and Madhya Pradesh (third) with 4,057 and 3,128 cases respectively. Mumbai followed Delhi, which topped the list with 33 percent of the cases.
As per the NCRB data released on Thursday, 76 corruption related cases were registered in 2015, which increased to 119 in 2016.
Total 84,746 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage modesty were reported in 2016.
If one took corrected figures for the past years as well, 2016 would in fact reflect an increase of about 2.6 per cent in overall crimes.
Mumbai also saw the second highest number of crimes against women with 5,128 cases, of which 712 cases were of rape and 2,138 were for outraging a woman's modesty.

In cases of kidnapping and abduction of women, 3,364 cases were registered in Delhi, followed by 1,142 cases in Mumbai, and 674 cases in Bengaluru.
Maharashtra reported the highest number of missing persons (94,919 - 17.2%) out of the total of 5,49,008 persons (2,34,334 males and 3,14,674 females).
According to the report for 2016, covering 19 cities with a population above two million, Delhi reported 33 per cent (13,803 cases of 41,761) of crimes against women previous year. Other cases like murders, kidnap and cyber crime have registered an increase.Andhra Pradesh recorded 193 dowry deaths as against 174 in 2015, apart from 31 women trafficking and 626 kidnapping and abduction of women cases past year.
Delhi city topped all of NCRB crime categories - kidnapping and abduction, murder, rape, cruelty by husband and his relatives, dowry deaths, juveniles in conflict with law, economic offences - apart from cyber crimes. It was followed by Madhya Pradesh (8.9 per cent), Maharashtra (8.8 per cent) and Kerala (8.7 per cent).
