Less than a day after Twitter came under fire for bestowing a coveted blue checkmark on white nationalist Jason Kessler, it has chose to appease angry users by suspending its verification program all together.
Kessler had deleted his account previously after insulting the late Heyer's appearance and linking to extreme neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer. Verifying white supremacists reinforces the increasing belief that your site is a platform for hate speech.
The news follows backlash after Twitter assigned the blue and white check mark to white supremacist Jason Kessler. A Twitter spokesperson declined to comment on what exactly pausing "general verification" means.

Twitter verifies handles of influential celebrities, politicians, journalists, institutions and people known to have a huge following.
But the truth is that giving someone a blue checkmark is by definition an indicator of importance. If you're an individual requesting verification-rather than a company-you'll need to provide a copy of your passport or driver's license for Twitter to check your identity.
"Go ahead, add that middle name or even a few more emojis", said Twitter, which has been attracting a great deal of criticism of late. And Twitter's own support team pointed out that his verification has been misunderstood.
But the debate around the verification of accounts like Kessler's and Spencer's shows that verification has come to be seen not simply as a marker of authenticity, but as a means of legitimizing the views propagated by an account.
