The first charges stemming from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election were reportedly filed on Friday, marking the most significant development yet in the inquiry that began past year.
A federal grand jury handed down the charges, which were still under seal at the order of a federal judge, CNN reported. The nature of the charges is not clear, nor is the identity or number of individuals targeted.
Mueller was appointed by the Attorney General's Office to lead the investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 elections.
