Worryingly for the company, its US advertising revenues fell 11% compared to the same period a year ago, although this was more than offset by booming global advertising advertising revenues, which grew by 6%.
Twitter reported a net loss of $21 million and adjusted earnings per share of 10 cents.
In the same release, Twitter CFO Ned Segal said the company expects to become profitable in the fourth quarter, with expected earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) to reach between $220 million and $240 million, against capital expenditures of $110 million or less and stock-based compensation expenses between $90 and $100 million. The company has seen monthly active user figures increase, arresting the slide that it had to report across the summer. Twitter previously believed that their user base had stayed flat during the second quarter.
Twitter says it now has 330M monthly active users, with a combination of email and push notifications driving traffic to the platform.
Twitter claims that the error in counting their monthly active users did not affect the count of their daily users, which they have reported as growing by 14 percent.
