Public engagement will culminate in a Master Innovation and Development Plan that, if adopted by the Board of Directors of Waterfront Toronto and by Sidewalk Labs, will form the basis for the Quayside development and any subsequent revitalization of City-owned lands in the Eastern Waterfront.
At least 3.3 million square feet of residential, office and commercial space - including a new headquarters for Google Canada - could be developed, according to The Globe and Mail, and the district would be a "test bed" for the combination of technology and urbanism.

Naturally, the first company moving to Quayside will be Google, but the technology giant could soon be joined by Amazon, with Toronto among the cities vying to be the home of the company's second North American headquarters.

Sidewalk Labs describes the neighborhood as being built not from the ground up, but from the "internet up". Choosing Toronto to make this vision a reality was no easy task for the Sidewalk Labs, the division of Alphabet responsible for this massive undertaking. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced the partnership with Google, said he hoped that Quayside would become "a thriving hub for innovation and a community for tens of thousands of people to live, work and play".
"This will create a testbed for new technologies", Trudeau said. Sidewalk Labs, which built a large free Wi-Fi network in NY called LinkNYC, won a bid with Waterfront Toronto to help design a neighborhood named Quayside, on a corner of port land southeast of downtown. Japanese companies like Toshiba and Hitachi, as well as United States companies like General Electric, having been stepping up their game in the smart city market.
The neighborhood design will continue to be massaged over the next year with extra attention placed on community input. Waterfront Toronto recently received a $1.25 billion (CAD) investment by federal, provincial, and municipal governments to revitalize the area with critical infrastructure and flood protection. The process will begin next month with a town hall meeting on November 1st.
