The husband of actress and BJP MP Kirron Kher, will succeed the controversial Gajendra Chauhan, whose appointment in 2014 had triggered widespread student protests.
Prolific Bollywood actor Anupam Kher has been appointed the new chairman of the Film and Television Institute in Pune.
Before his term as FTII chairman came to an end in February this year, Chouhan approached the I&B Ministry seeking an extension of his tenure on the ground.

Now Chauhan, in reaction to Anupam's appointment, told IANS that FTII needed a good administrator more than a good actor. However, we are sure that he would do a commendable job and with his experience, commitment, dedication, and charisma the students of FTII will definitely be rewarded. "I want to interact with students to understand their requirements, and along with faculties, I would be helping students for their betterment", said Anupam, a vociferous BJP supporter.
Kher has also been part of acclaimed worldwide films such as the 2002 Golden Globe-nominated Bend It Like Beckham, Ang Lee's Lust, Caution, and the 2013 Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook. The students had even held a 139-day strike to oppose the appointment and protests of "Gajendra Chauhan go back" had become a common sight.
Kher has been a recipent of National Film Award twice for the category Special Jury Award for his movies Daddy (1989) and Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara (2005) respectively. He also pointed out that there's a possible "conflict of interest' angle involved as Kher himself runs his own acting school".
