In addition to the flagship i7 Intel added more cores to its i5 and i3 chips, with a 6-core i5 processor and its first quad-core Core i3, and rolled out workstation chips for tasks such as high-resolution video editing, the i9-7940X, i9-7960X and i9-7980XE, with 14, 16 and 18 cores.
With Intel Core X-series Extreme Edition processors, content creators can expect up to 80 percent better performance for VR content creation1 and up to 60 percent faster 4K video editing2 over the previous generation's Extreme Edition.
Intel's desktop lineup contains six 8th Generation chips at launch, there are two for each processor class. Prices for the new lineup start at $120 for the 3.6GHz Core i3-8100 and go up to $359 for the 3.8GHz Core i7-8700K. Retail pricing will, naturally, be higher in all case.
The latest K processors are supported by new Intel Z370 chipset-based motherboards for optimized performance, power, and memory routing in overclocking, according to Intel. Core i7 and Core i5 both now offer six cores with the Core i3 now offering four physical cores. The i3 8350K is shaping up to be an impressive chip for gamers, now confirmed at $168. Intel is also touting big improvements on the gaming side of things, calling out the top-of-the-line i7-8700K as the company's "best gaming desktop processor ever".

The bad side of the story is the higher launch price tag, which has been increased by around 20 percent compared to the 7th generation CPUs, with Core i7-8700K going for United States $359 while the Core i7-7700K was launched at United States $305. The new CPUs will require Intel's Z370 chipset-based motherboards, so they're not at all compatible with whatever model you have right now. The chip maker already made it clear that the new chipsets will not work with the previous-generation CPUs.

Obviously it was in response to AMD's competitive threat, alongside the endless and unstoppable rise of ARM processors that Intel had to threaten Microsoft and Qualcomm not to further popularise with a version of Windows 10 running on it.
