The search-and-rescue effort for three Marines lost when an MV-22 Osprey crashed off the coast of Queensland, Australia, earlier Saturday has turned into a recovery mission, officials with III Marine Expeditionary Force said.
"Operations have now shifted to recovery efforts", a statement from the III Marine Expeditionary Force said.
Next-of-kin for the three missing Marines have been notified, the military said.
NPR's Scott Horsley reports that President Trump has been briefed on the incident by his Chief of Staff John Kelly.
Australian Defense Minister Marise Payne said Saturday's crash took place near Shoalwater Bay off Queensland state, The Associated Press reported. Twenty-six crew members were on board and 23 were rescued within an hour.
"In recent weeks, many Queenslanders have had the opportunity to meet USA servicemen and servicewoman visiting as they prepare for the joint military exercise Talisman Sabre in central Queensland".
US defense officials have not released specifics about what caused the aircraft to go down, saying only that the incident is under investigation.

The Osprey is created to take off like a helicopter but fly like a plane.
"I can confirm no Australian Defense Force personnel were on board the aircraft".
The Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group was in Australia to participate in joint training manoeuvres involving more than 33,000 United States and Australian military personnel, which ended two weeks ago.
A reason for the crash is yet to be determined, and an investigation is still underway to know exactly what happened to the aircraft and what was the reason for the collision. In the past, some residents of Okinawa who were opposed to the USA military base there have seized on the Osprey as a symbol of the Americans' presence.
The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit - based out of Okinawa, Japan - comprises roughly 2,200 Marines and U.S. Navy sailors.
