The National Night Out campaign involves citizens, law-enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations, and local officials from 9,500 communities from all 50 states, US territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide.
Organizers also urge people to come out to the events, even if they do not live in a scheduled stop.
Free food, activities and back-to-school haircuts for children will be provided.
The initiative strives to build relationships between the public and the police departments who serve them to make neighborhoods and communities safer. Additionally, people can lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and be outside with their neighbors and police from 5 to 9 p.m.
National Night Out has occurred throughout the country on the first Tuesday in August for more than 30 years. The group plans to walk to the church wearing a yellow shirt.
