The recovery of the image sensor business from last year's quake saw the operation make a profit of $500 million.
Operating income increased 101.4 billion yen year-on-year to 157.6 billion yen.
The box-office success of its "Spider-Man: Homecoming" film has also fueled hopes of a rise in earnings for Sony's pictures business, which is working through a restructuring plan. Sonys fiscal first quarter profit almost quadrupled compared to a year ago, boosted by its lucrative image sensor and other businesses, highlighting a gradual recovery at the Japanese electronics and entertainment company. Lower hardware prices wasn't the only contributing factor here, however, as Sony also noted "the absence of the significant contribution of a highly profitable first-party software title" compared to the same period a year ago.

- The recorded music operations of Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Music Japan saw revenue grow 11.3 percent to $898.5 million (99.822 billion yen) from the prior year's first quarter total of $829.84 million (89.71 billion yen). Sony expects to reach 78 million PlayStation 4 shipments by the end of its 2017 financial year.

As Business Insider notes, there are several reasons why the PS4 found its way to the top and stayed there: It was the cheapest console at launch, it's a versatile machine that can do a lot more than just play games, and it has some strong exclusive titles. Sales also experienced a 17% increase on a constant currency basis over last year's ¥141.9 billion ($1.29 billion). Under the new pricing structure, the cost of an annual membership will increase by a quarter from its current £39.99 level to £49.99; the cost of a quarterly membership will increase by the same proportion, going from £14.99 to £19.99, while the fee for those choosing to play monthly is to go from £5.99 to £6.99. Sony, of course, released Uncharted 4 in May 2016, which has since gone on to sell 8.7m units as of December 2016. For Semiconductors, sales are expected to be lower than the earlier forecast primarily due to lower-than-expected image sensor unit sales for mobile products.
