But he has privately floated potential replacements for Priebus, including Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, deputy national security adviser Dina Powell, chief economic adviser Gary Cohn and former campaign adviser David Urban, according to three people who've been in conversation with the president and senior staffers recently.
After months of speculation about Priebus' fate, Trump tweeted the decision just as he landed in Washington after an event in NY in which he lavishly praised Kelly's performance at Homeland Security. "He has worked with many smart, successful people in his remarkable career, but he has never worked this closely with someone as used to command, organization and dignified insistence on teamwork as Secretary Kelly", he continued.
I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff. He is a Great American. and a Great Leader.
Trump appointed Kelly, a retired Marine general, to secretary of Homeland Security on December 7, 2016 and he was confirmed on January, 20, 2017 the first day of Trump's administration.
Priebus, the former chairman of the Republican National Committee, represents the establishment Republican wing brought on in efforts to provide Washington know-how to a president with no experience holding public office.
Priebus was tapped for the post at the urging of top congressional Republicans - including House Speaker Paul Ryan, a fellow Wisconsinite - who advised Trump that he needed a Washington insider to help him shepherd his legislative agenda.
But some advisers to Trump were opposed to the choice, arguing that Kelly did not have the political background for the job.
Putin says Russian Federation will respond to 'insolence' of United States sanctions
If he opts for a veto, the bill can become law anyway if two-thirds of both the House and Senate vote for an override. The Russia sanctions in H.R. 3364 are an unusual signal of disapproval of Trump from congressional Republicans.

Trump names John Kelly chief of staff, replacing Reince Priebus
Minutes later, the president tweeted "I would like to thank Reince Priebus for his service and dedication to his country". John Kelly , the secretary of Homeland Security, has been named the new White House chief of staff.
Priebus, a Wisconsin native, joined the administration as chief of staff after a almost six-year tenure as chairman of the RNC, the final months of which he spent in a dual role as a top adviser to Trump's campaign. Always seeming to be on the edge of ouster, Priebus saw his fate finally sealed a week ago when Trump hired Scaramucci, an edgy Wall Street financier, over the chief of staff's objections.
Priebus traveled with Trump earlier in the day to an appearance in Brentwood, New York. He also suggested that Priebus would be fired if he were found to be a source for leaks to the press.
"We don't talk that way down here", Hayes said. "I support him in that", he told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room".
Scaramucci was the latest top aide to be granted a direct line to Trump, and it became increasingly unclear who actually reported to Priebus. He praised what he said was a "guy from Kenosha, Wisc. who revitalized the Republican National Committee and became White House chief of staff".
"He knows how to do this: with common sense and good leadership", said Kelly's longtime friend, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to offer frank opinions.
"I'm doing great", Priebus said.
Priebus accompanied Trump on Air Force One for a day trip to Long Island as his fate was being decided. He defended the orders to reporters and lawmakers and insisted that he indeed had been part of the decision-making process.
