While "War for the Planet of the Apes" can celebrate victory at the box office, The Hollywood Reporter notes that the film's opening-weekend tally is actually lower than estimated, especially given the film's $150-million budget.
Directed by Matt Reeves, the film opened to a decent start. All of a sudden, there was a 20% deficit for War compared to Rise, and the opening day for the third film was only $2.5 million bigger than the original.

'Spider-Man: Homecoming' opened strong last week, but fell a superhero's 61%, giving up the top spot in the process. Spider-Man 3 dropped by 62% in its second weekend in 2007 and there were no Thursday pre-shows back then to boost opening weekend numbers. The movie is now set to walk away with a win over "Spiderman" this weekend to the tune of $57 million, according to the website Variety.
Despicable Me 3 took the third spot in its third weekend with $18.9 million, while Baby Driver took number four with $8.8 million. The film has $188 million domestically and $619.4 million worldwide. Edgar Wright's super cool crime caper Baby Driver has now racked up more than $73 million in the U.S. and is on the verge of a global total of $100 million. The Homecoming fall was also in line with the 60% of last year's Captain America: Civil War which introduced Tom Holland as the new Peter Parker and did not face any major competition from new releases. It stars Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, Ray Romano, Adeel Akhtar and Anupam Kher. Given the film's continued durability, it should pass the $400 million mark by mid-August. Despite the #1 finish, it will be hard for Fox to get out of the red with box office tickets alone.
