While Brexit minister David Davis on Monday stressed that Britain would have to quit the EU's common market and customs union, Hammond agreed with Carney on the need for a transitional deal "to avoid unnecessary disruption and risky cliff edges".
There will be a "two-phased" negotiation, with divorce terms to be set first before talks on future trade relations.
The bloc would first seek to reach an agreement on European Union citizens rights, the UK's departure bill, and the future border between the Republic of Ireland, an European Union member, and Northern Ireland, a British region.
"This first session was useful, we start off on the right foot as the clock is ticking", Barnier told a joint press conference with British counterpart David Davis.
Treasury chief Philip Hammond and Bank of England Governor Mark Carney said in separate speeches that Britain must use the negotiations to reduce obstacles to trade in services while protecting the benefits of free trade in goods.
